Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an accountant, or can I just use software like Xero?

Software records your numbers. It does not tell you whether they are right, or what they mean for your tax. That is the accountant’s job. Plenty of owners run their own software and bring us in to keep it compliant, prepare the financials, and handle the lodgements. The two work well together.

It depends on your situation, not a rule of thumb. Size, risk, asset protection, admin and cost all pull in different directions. A company separates the business from you personally, but it brings more obligations. We look at where your business is now and where it is heading, then help you choose the structure that fits.

Once your turnover reaches the threshold the ATO sets, GST registration becomes compulsory, and BAS comes with it. Some businesses register earlier by choice. We check where you sit against the threshold, register you at the right time, and take the BAS off your hands from there.

Not the way a sole trader does. A company is a separate entity, so you cannot simply take the cash. You are usually paid through wages, a director’s fee, or dividends, each with its own tax treatment. We set this up properly, so you are paid in a way that is compliant and clean at year end.

Yes, and it makes everything easier. Mixing the two muddies your records and can cause tax problems, especially in a company, where drawing money the wrong way has consequences. A separate account keeps your financials clean, your BAS simpler, and your year end far less painful. We will show you how to set it up.
